# AQCat Adsorption Spin

> AQCat Adsorption Spin is a fully automated dense adsorption workflow powered by the spin-aware AQCat25-EV2 MLP — 0.12 eV MAE against DFT, results in minutes.

## Overview

**AQCat Adsorption Spin** is SandboxAQ's fully automated dense adsorption workflow for heterogeneous catalyst pre-screening. The workflow handles the full simulation pipeline — bulk selection, slab generation, adsorbate placement, and geometry optimization — and returns the lowest binding energy across placements in minutes, not hours.

It covers iron, cobalt, nickel, and the other magnetic elements that spin-unpolarized models get wrong. Those earth-abundant first-row transition metals sit behind ammonia synthesis and Fischer-Tropsch. Model an iron surface as non-magnetic and its binding energies and activation barriers come out wrong.

Energy and force calculations within the workflow are powered by the **AQCat25-EV2 MLP**, SandboxAQ's proprietary machine learning potential trained on high-accuracy DFT data. The MLP delivers near-DFT accuracy at a fraction of the compute cost — 0.12 eV MAE against DFT minimum adsorption energies, versus 0.28 eV for the pretrained EquiformerV2 baseline. That accuracy changes the unit of work. Lab screening moves at two to 30 catalysts per week; DFT lifts that by 10x to 100x; an MLIP at this accuracy takes it thousands of times further, which turns a candidate library from a research program into a batch job.

AQCat Adsorption Spin is available via the **SandboxAQ MCP Server** — SandboxAQ's fully managed server, optimized for LLM and agentic integration.

## What is AQCat Adsorption Spin?

AQCat Adsorption Spin is a **Large Quantitative Model (LQM)** — a modular, containerized scientific workflow that wraps SandboxAQ's proprietary AQCat25-EV2 MLP into a single, callable API. Unlike open-source alternatives that require custom scripting for orchestration, AQCat Adsorption Spin delivers an **end-to-end dense adsorption workflow** in one API call or tool invocation.

Through the SandboxAQ MCP Server, users can:

* Specify a bulk material by composition string (e.g., `"Co-Ni"`) — no Materials Project ID or crystal file required.
* Receive the lowest binding energy and per-placement convergence status within minutes, not hours.
* Screen catalyst configurations at a predictable, per-RU price.
* Integrate AQCat outputs directly into LLM-driven research workflows via Claude or other MCP clients.

## How It Works

A single **Relaxation Unit (RU)** represents one complete adsorption workflow for a single bulk–facet–adsorbate combination. The AQCat Adsorption Spin workflow automatically orchestrates:

1. **Bulk Selection:** The system queries an internal database of crystal structures. If you specify a composition string, it scores candidates by element fraction and selects the highest-scoring, lowest-energy bulk automatically. Explicit Materials Project IDs (`bulk_src_ids`) and internal database indices (`bulk_ids`) are also supported.
2. **Slab Generation:** A surface slab is constructed from the selected bulk using the specified Miller indices (facet).
3. **Adsorbate Placement:** The adsorbate molecule is placed in up to 5 distinct configurations on the slab surface.
4. **Geometry Relaxation:** Each placement is passed through the **AQCat25-EV2 MLP** for iterative geometry relaxation. The MLP computes energies and forces at each step until convergence or the maximum step limit is reached.
5. **Result Delivery:** Results are delivered as a `predictions` array in the poll response — one entry per placement, each containing the binding energy (`energy` in eV), convergence status (`is_relaxed`), and per-atom force convergence (`max_force`).

Jobs typically complete in **3–5 minutes** on NVIDIA A100 or T4 GPU hardware (observed range: 3–5 min; may be longer under high load).

  **Unconverged placements:** Always check the `is_relaxed` field on each placement in the response before using its energy for analysis. Unconverged placements (`is_relaxed: false`) may have anomalously high energies and should be excluded from selectivity comparisons.

  **Rate limits:** AQCat rate-limits concurrent submissions. Submit no more than **15 jobs in parallel** to avoid errors. If a rate-limit error occurs, wait \~10 seconds before retrying — rate-limit responses do not include a `Retry-After` header.

  **Defining an RU:** An RU is consumed for each unique *bulk–facet–adsorbate combination*. Adding a second facet, a second adsorbate type, or a second bulk structure each consumes an additional RU.

## Using AQCat

<Warning>
  **LLM tool invocation is non-deterministic.** Your client may occasionally answer an AQCat-shaped question from its own knowledge rather than calling the `aqcat` tool. ### Setup

AQCat is reached through the SandboxAQ MCP Server, so there is nothing AQCat-specific to install. Connect the server once and the `aqcat` tool appears in your client alongside the AQPotency tools.

### Improving Tool-Invocation Reliability

Two failure modes are common when asking your client about AQCat-shaped problems: (1) it answers from its own training data rather than calling the `aqcat` tool, and (2) it calls a different MCP tool that happened to sound relevant. Both are addressed by client configuration plus prompt hygiene.

* **Disable lazy loading in Claude Desktop** — the single most impactful fix. See [MCP → Improving tool-invocation reliability](/mcp-server/mcp-server#improving-tool-invocation-reliability) for the exact toggle.
* **Name the tool explicitly** in your prompt: *"Use the AQCat tool to…"* or *"Call `aqcat` with…"*.
* **Include the surface facet and bulk composition** in the prompt — e.g. *"Cu (110)"* or *"Co-Ni (111)"*. Ambiguous phrasing like *"on copper"* without a facet is more likely to be answered from prior training.
* **Ask a scoped, computational question** — *"What is the binding energy of…"* or *"Find the lowest-energy configuration for…"* triggers tool selection more reliably than *"How does X adsorb on Y?"*
* **If your client still answers without calling the tool, explicitly ask it to.** *"Please call the aqcat tool with the parameters above"* is a valid recovery prompt.

### Example Prompts

Realistic prompts you can issue once the SandboxAQ MCP Server is connected. Each prompt names the AQCat tool explicitly and surfaces the parameters (bulk composition, adsorbate, facet) that make the call converge on the same tool selection every time. When the job is complete (`is_terminal: true`), `predictions` contains one entry per placement. The `atoms` field is reserved for a future release and is currently returned as `null` — clients should rely on `energy`, `max_force`, and `is_relaxed` for analysis:

  **Response payload is compact.** Each `predictions` entry is a small flat object — `combo_key`, `placement_idx`, `energy`, `max_force`, and three boolean flags. The `atoms` field appears at `detail=true` but is currently always `null`; a future release will populate it with structural data for clients that need it. For all present-day analysis, use `energy`, `max_force`, and `is_relaxed` from the top-level prediction fields.

### Supported Input Formats

Exactly **one** bulk specification method must be provided per request. Providing zero or more than one will return a 400 error.

  **Bulk composition matching:** `bulk_composition_contains` is a *contains-match*, not an exact stoichiometry match. For example, `"Pt3Fe"` and `"PtFe"` may both resolve to the same 1:1 PtFe structure in the Materials Project database. For exact composition control, use `bulk_src_ids` (Materials Project ID) instead of a composition string.

  **Adsorbate validation:** If the submitted adsorbate is not in the supported list, AQCat may silently substitute it with a chemically similar adsorbate that *is* in the list — without returning an error. ## Interpreting Results

### Energy Sign Convention & Reference States

AQCat binding energies represent the **reaction energy (`ΔE_rxn`)** for adsorbing a molecule onto the surface relative to gas-phase reference molecules (CO, H₂, H₂O, and N₂ — see Table 5 of the AQCat25-EV2 manuscript). The convention is: **more negative = stronger binding**.

<Warning>
  **Cross-adsorbate comparison is invalid.** Because different adsorbates use different gas-phase references, their binding energies cannot be meaningfully compared to each other on the same surface. Only compare binding energies for the **same adsorbate** across different surfaces or compositions. *Valid query:* "Which Pt-Fe stoichiometry binds `*CO` most strongly?" *Invalid query:* "Does this surface bind `*CO` more strongly than `*OH`?"
</Warning>

Absolute energy values may be positive (indicating unfavourable binding under the chosen reference convention) — this is not necessarily chemically unusual. For example, `*NO` on pure Ru returns a positive `ΔE_rxn` because of how the N₂ and H₂O references are defined. Always interpret binding energies **relative to other surfaces** for the same adsorbate, not as absolute binding strengths.

### The `is_spin_off` flag

The `is_spin_off` flag in each placement result indicates whether spin polarization was enabled for the DFT calculation used to train the AQCat25-EV2 MLP (from the manuscript, page 21):

## Scientific Methodology

AQCat Adsorption Spin runs the AQCat25-EV2 family of machine learning potentials, trained on Open Catalyst 2020 (OC20) together with AQCat25.

Training strategy carries most of the result. Fine-tuning an OC20-pretrained EquiformerV2 on AQCat25 alone buys accuracy on the new spin-polarized data and wrecks it on OC20, the failure mode known as catastrophic forgetting. Joint training avoids that trade. The released 31M-parameter model trains from scratch on AQCat25 plus 20M OC20 examples and posts 290 meV energy MAE on OC20 validation, matching the 301 meV of the pretrained model it replaces, while cutting AQCat25 test error from 1268 meV to 349 meV.

Joint training raises a second problem, since one training set now mixes two DFT fidelities and two physics treatments. Feature-wise Linear Modulation (FiLM) conditions the network on that metadata, spin polarization and calculation fidelity, so the model knows which regime a system belongs to. Across both the cotraining and cotuning runs, FiLM variants beat their non-FiLM counterparts on spin-polarized systems.

The benchmark that matters for screening uses 109 adsorbate-slab pairs with 50 adsorbate placements each, relaxed under DFT and again under ML from identical starting configurations. A system counts as a success when the ML minimum adsorption energy lands within 0.1 eV of the DFT minimum. AQCat25-EV2 succeeds on 69.9% of systems at 0.12 eV MAE. The pretrained EquiformerV2 baseline manages 48.2% at 0.28 eV, and that baseline skipped every system containing an element outside OC20.

  **Benchmark settings are not production settings.** The 50-placement protocol above is a research configuration used to measure model accuracy against DFT. Production AQCat calls are capped at **5 placements** — see [Limits & Quotas](#limits).

## The AQCat25 Dataset

AQCat25 holds 13.5 million single-point DFT calculations across 47,000 unique adsorbate-slab systems, built on NVIDIA DGX H100 hardware at a cost of more than 400,000 GPU-hours. Three choices separate it from OC20:

* **Spin polarization** for Ce, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Os, Ru, V, and W. AQCat25 is the only large-scale public dataset carrying spin-polarized data across a diverse heterogeneous catalyst space.
* **A 500 eV plane-wave cutoff**, up from 350 eV in OC20, with Gaussian smearing at 0.1 eV. Non-metal catalysts need the higher cutoff for accurate total energies.
* **Six elements OC20 never covered**: lithium, barium, lanthanum, cerium, magnesium, and fluorine, along with 20 reaction transition states.

AQCat25 samples high-energy configurations alongside relaxed ones, drawing on transition states, rattled geometries, and short molecular dynamics runs. That coverage keeps the model stable when a relaxation wanders off the low-energy path.

SandboxAQ released AQCat25-EV2 on Hugging Face, free for academic use. AQCat25 carries a CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license. Commercial use of either runs through SandboxAQ.

AQCat Adsorption Spin is priced on a **per-Relaxation Unit (RU)** basis. One RU = one complete dense adsorption workflow for a single bulk–facet–adsorbate combination. There are no upfront license fees or commitments required to get started.

  **Compute limits are hard-capped server-side.** The 5-placement, 100-step limit is enforced regardless of what is submitted in the request payload, preventing compute runaway from the dense adsorption matrix.
